Adding or Removing a SID/STAR

The Jeppesen Internet Flight Planner (JIFP) contains a database of published Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs) and Standard Terminal Arrivals (STARs). You can add pilot-nav SIDs and STARs to your route after entering a route with a departure and destination. A pilot-nav SID, as opposed to a vector SID, is one that has specific routes as part of the procedure.

NOTE When selecting a procedure, verify with your paper or electronic terminal charts that the procedure is still valid and has not been replaced or modified. Navigational data is updated every 28 days and changes within the associated 28 days may not occur until the next cycle.

Adding or Replacing a SID

To add or replace a SID for your route:

  1. Open the Add SID dialog box with one of the following actions:

  1. Select a SID from the list in the ADD SID dialog box. If the Preview check box is selected, the chart shows a preview of each SID with a dotted green route line. Click the plus (+) sign next to each procedure to review the waypoints before accepting a selection.

  1. Click OK to accept.

After you accept a selection, the waypoints for the procedure appear on your route.

Adding or Replacing a STAR

To add or replace a STAR for your route:

  1. Open the Add STAR dialog box with one of the following actions:

  1. Select a STAR from the list in the ADD STAR dialog box. If the Preview check box is selected, the chart shows a preview of each SID with a dotted green route line. Click the plus (+) sign next to each procedure to review the waypoints before accepting a selection.

  2. Click OK to accept.

After you accept a selection, the waypoints for the procedure appear on your route.

SIDs and STARs on Alternate Routes

Notes About Adding a SID/STAR

There are some scenarios where adding a SID or STAR to an existing route makes the route loop back unnecessarily. JIFP is removes overlapping waypoints only when the waypoints on the route duplicate one or more waypoints that appear in the chosen procedure. However, JIFP cannot detect where a route may loop back around to a waypoint not in the procedure.

  1. In the image below, a route is planned with low airways from Seattle-Tacoma International airport (KSEA) to Los Angeles International airport (KLAX).

  1. The original route includes the SEA VOR. When the SID BANGR4.BANGR (RW34L) is added, the route basically loops around on itself in order to pick up SEA.

  1. In order to get the desired route, delete the SEA VOR from the route.

The image below displays the same KSEA to KLAX route, but going through WNSLO, MIKNE, and BANGR. If SID BANGR4.BANGR (RW34L) is added, JIFP detects that those waypoints also exist in the route and replaces them with the SIDs waypoints. The loop back is unnecessary because those waypoints already exist in the transition.
