Text Briefing Enroute Chart Overlays

After downloading a text weather briefing from CSC DUATS, DTC DUAT or Jeppesen Weather, weather information displays over the Enroute Charts View and in the Profile View. The information displayed is dependent upon what was selected to download (AIRMETS, SIGMETS, METARS, and Winds Aloft).

Information Displayed in the Enroute Chart View

You can view areas affected by SIGMETs and AIRMETs along your route of flight, as well as winds by using the Main toolbar. After you have retrieved a text weather briefing from Jeppesen, CSC DUATS or DTC DUAT, or imported a previous downloaded briefing, JIFP draws the boundaries of the regions affected by either type of advisory.

Viewing AIRMET/SIGMET

Areas affected by AIRMETs and SIGMETs in the weather briefing are graphically displayed on the Enroute Chart View as areas outlined by colored polygons. Click the AIRMETs/SIGMETs button to enable the following weather information:

To view detailed information about the AIRMET/SIGMET, do one of the following:

A Note About Convective SIGMETS Currently, JIFP does not display Convective SIGMETS on the enroute chart. After you download a standard route briefing, view the textual information in the Weather tab about Convective SIGMETS.

Viewing Wind Information

Surface winds and winds aloft information is automatically imported into your flight plan and the profile view after a successful weather briefing download that includes wind information. If your briefing terminates abnormally before getting the winds, you must reconnect and try again. (Outlook briefings do not necessarily include winds aloft forecasts). DUATS receives wind information at 0440 and 1640 Zulu for the following 24 hours. This situation means that you can get winds anywhere from 12 to 24 hours ahead, depending on when you download.

View winds aloft graphically by clicking the winds button that might be displayed as or on the Main toolbar. Wind information is also provided in the Profile View and in the Expanded Flight Log. When a saved route is loaded and new wind data is downloaded, JIFP reads the valid time from the latest briefing text when you reopen the saved plan; then it discards the outdated wind information.

CAUTION Verify that the briefing file you are using contains valid winds aloft data for the time and route of your flight. Always familiarize yourself with the winds aloft from your briefing, and verify that the winds aloft in your flight log agree with what you expect the winds to be.
