Viewing Weather in the Profile

After planning a route and downloading a text weather briefing, weather observations (cloud data, rain, snow, and so on) in the Profile View appear.

If the weather is clear, you will not see any cloud symbols displayed, but you can tell the cloud data is turned on because JIFP displays the following.

WARNING--ALTITUDE OF CLOUD TOPS NOT KNOWN

If you do not see that warning, right-click a blank area in the Profile View and make sure Show Clouds is selected.

JIFP also displays symbols depicting precipitation. The clouds and precipitation symbols give qualitative indications of this type of activity, but are not very specific.

WARNING Do not use this as a substitute for an approved weather briefing!

You can see the weather phenomena from which the symbol was generated by hovering your mouse pointer over the symbol.

WARNING These cloud depictions are based on METARs from weather stations within a specific distance. You cannot infer that the clouds and weather are as depicted away from the reporting stations.

EXAMPLE: Suppose you are flying down the west side of a mountain range and the nearest METAR report is from an airport on the east side of the mountains. It could be clear at that airport, but there could be clouds and precipitation along your route.

Winds Aloft in the Profile View

JIFP always uses the winds aloft from the latest weather briefing you received from DUAT/S or the Jeppesen Weather service. You can also import a previous briefing by selecting Tools > Import Weather Briefing.

After you get a weather briefing that includes a Winds Aloft forecast from DUATS, winds aloft will also be displayed on the Enroute Charts View and in the expanded Nav Log.

NOTE If you download Plain Language briefings, select the FAA Weather check box. The Jeppesen Internet Flight Planner (JIFP) uses the FAA format to calculate winds aloft data in your flight plan.

In the Profile View, winds are displayed as blue arrows at different altitudes. The arrow length indicates the relative strength of the wind component. The longer the arrow the faster the wind speed. To view the direction, speed, headwind, and crosswind for a specific wind and altitude, hover your cursor over the blue wind arrow and a tooltip will appear.
